Two people are dead, including a 5 years old child and three more were injured after an SUV and a box truck collided near the George Washington Bridge on Wednesday night. The horrific crash happened at about 8 Pm, on the eastbound side of the transverse roadway in Manhattan coming from the bridge’s upper level. The SUV, a GMC Acadia with New Jersey plates, driven by a man in his 30s, was carrying two children, ages 5 and 1, as well as two women, one in her 30s and the other in her 70s, told Port Authority Police spokesman Joseph Pentangelo. The driver slammed into the back of the box truck, which was stopped in traffic, Pentangelo continued. First responders extricated the SUV’s driver, who was rushed to NY Presbyterian Hospital Columbia, where he and the 5 years old died, Pentangelo added. The other injured passengers were also taken to NY Presbyterian Hospital Columbia. Sources believe the people in the SUV were family members, though their exact relations were not clear late Wednesday night. Police reopened one eastbound lane on the upper level as authorities investigated the smashup. No one was immediately arrested or ticketed.
