Jets linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin was arrested on Wednesday in relation to an April nightclub beating. Mauldin 24 years old turned himself in at the 10th precinct in Chelsea at 8:50 Am and was charged with misdemeanor assault. The 24 years old is accused of punching a man in the face during an April 2 altercation at the Highline Ballroom, sparked by the spilling of champagne. Mauldin faces up to one year in jail. The victim, 22 years old Jean Lopez, is suing the Georgia native in civil court, telling Mauldin broke several bones in his face during the attack. “We learned of the charges brought today by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, which we expected all along. At this point we feel that it is appropriate to make no further comment so that justice will prevail” Lopez’s attorney Glenn Race told. The 5-foot-4, 145 pound Lopez needed surgery after the attack left him with multiple fractures of his facial bones, his lawyer told. A Jets spokesman said team was aware of situation. Mauldin lawyer Alex Spiro promised to fight charges and lawsuit.
“We will answer the allegations in court” he told. The Jets have seen more than their fair share of off-field drama this off season. Criminal charges against former Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis were tossed in March after a buddy of defensive star testified that he was the one who knocked out two men outside a Pittsburgh bar. In May, Jets receiver Robby Anderson was charged with resisting arrest after allegedly pushing a police officer at a Miami music festival. Earlier this month, Leonard Williams and Darron Lee were involved in an altercation at Governors Ball music festival on Randalls Island. Video of ordeal shows Williams carrying an irate Lee away from a group of people. At least 1 person claiming to have witnessed fracas said Lee was fighting with a woman and went on to “manhandle her” and “call her names.” The NFL is investigating for the incident.
