Jaguar’s newest kitty unleashed its inner Star Fox at its worldwide debut on Thursday. Following the success of F-Pace SUV, Jaguar continues to bank on the hot-selling crossover segment by introducing the smaller, but equally pretty, E-Pace compact crossover, via unconventional methods. With as gorgeous and award-winning a sibling as F-Pace to compete with, the stakes were high for the E-Pace to make a lasting first impression. So British automaker cranked the wow factor up to 11, introducing E-Pace to the world with a Guinness World Record-breaking barrel roll. Yes, an actual 270 degree corkscrew Star Fox-style barrel roll. E-Pace, launched 50 feet into air, setting a world record for “Furthest Barrel Roll in a Production Vehicle” as it stormed the stage Thursday in London. No, Peppy was not in command of this jungle cat. Legendary British stunt driver Terry Grant took the wheel of compact crossover to complete the automotive acrobatic stunt, but do not worry, he had been practicing the jump for months in advance. “As far as I am aware, no production car has ever cleanly completed a bona-fide barrel roll and therefore it has always been an ambition of mine to perform one ever since I was a boy” Grant said. Behind the wheel of E-Pace, Grant needed 525 feet of run-up and run-off in order to nail the tricky maneuver and managed to withstand a stomach-churning 5,5 Gs of force completing athletic leap. 2018 Jaguar E-Pace, which was teased earlier this month, starts at $38’600, making it competitively priced among an onslaught of performance-oriented compact luxury crossovers. Launching in fall of 2017, E-Pace is equipped with a turbocharged 4,0 liter 4 cylinder engine cranking 247 hp, with the option of a more powerful engine producing 296 hp and hitting 60 from standing at 5,9 seconds, according to the British automaker.
